Beach 8 km east of Mazunte
Tiny coves just past Puerto Ángel with clear, calm water, good for snorkeling over rocks and coral.
Playa Estacahuite is a set of tiny coves tucked into the rocky shore just outside Puerto Ángel, about 20 minutes east of Mazunte. There is not much sand, only a few small pockets of beach between the rocks, but the water is usually calm and clear, and that is the point: this is one of the best places on this stretch of coast for snorkeling straight from the shore.
A reef of coral and rock begins a few steps from the beach, in shallow water, with plenty of colorful fish around it. You can wade in, put your mask on and be over the reef almost at once, which makes it a good spot for beginners and children who swim well. Above the coves, a few small restaurants serve fish and seafood, and snorkel gear can usually be rented on site.
Boat tours from Puerto Ángel often stop here to snorkel as part of a morning on the water looking for dolphins, turtles and, in season, whales. Come in the morning, when the water tends to be clearest and the coves are quiet.
