Town 23 km northwest of Zihuatanejo
A laid-back surf village north of Ixtapa: five kilometers of beach, a well-known left point break, and small guesthouses.
Troncones is a beach village about 30 kilometers up the coast from Zihuatanejo, in the municipality of La Unión. For a long time it was just a farming ejido by the sea; then a few North Americans bought land, built homes and small inns, and word spread among surfers. It has grown since, but it still has sandy lanes, hammocks between palms and very little nightlife, a deliberate contrast with the high-rises of Ixtapa.
The village stretches along about five kilometers of open beach dotted with guesthouses, eco-hostels, restaurants and surf schools. Troncones Point, at the north end, is a left point break over rock and some coral that works best with south swells, mostly in summer, and is better for confident surfers. In the gentler spring and autumn months, and at other spots along the beach, beginners and longboarders can find easier waves, and many hotels offer lessons.
In the turtle season, sea turtles nest on the beach, and even in high season it is easy to find a stretch of sand to yourself.
What to see and do
Surf Troncones Point if you are experienced, or take a lesson on the gentler beach breaks.
Walk the long beach at sunset and look for pelicans skimming the waves.
Settle into a beachfront restaurant for fish tacos and a cold drink.
Ask locally about turtle releases during the nesting season.
Getting there
Troncones is about 40 minutes from Zihuatanejo by car or taxi: drive northwest on Highway 200 past Ixtapa, then take the signed Troncones turnoff toward the sea. Buses heading north toward La Unión and Lázaro Cárdenas can drop you at the turnoff, but it is a few kilometers from there to the beach, so a taxi is simpler.
