Town 7 km west of Córdoba
Córdoba's flower-growing neighbor: gardenia and orchid nurseries, a bonsai museum, and the edge of the Metlac ravine.
Fortín de las Flores sits just west of Córdoba, close enough that the two towns almost run together, but it has a character of its own. The name tells its story: in the colonial era the Spanish built a small fort here by the Metlac River to protect the road between the port of Veracruz and the highlands, and in the 1800s local growers found that gardenias thrived in the warm, wet climate at about 1,000 meters.
Flowers became the town's living for most of the twentieth century. Gardenias are still its emblem, and nurseries around town grow orchids, camellias, azaleas, anthuriums, and dozens of other ornamental plants that are sold across Mexico. Walking past the greenhouses and roadside plant stalls is part of the visit.
The other big draw is the Tatsugoro Bonsai Museum, a Japanese-style garden with hundreds of bonsai trees, some of them very old. On the town's northern edge the land drops away into the Barranca de Metlac, a deep green ravine crossed by railway and highway bridges, which makes an easy add-on to a morning here.
