Huatusco

Town 12 km northeast of Coscomatepec

A misty coffee town east of Coscomatepec, with farms that offer tours and tastings and waterfalls in the surrounding hills.

Huatusco is a hill town of steep streets and cool, misty air, about 1,300 meters up in the mountains of central Veracruz, a short drive east of Coscomatepec. It is coffee country through and through: the slopes around town are covered in coffee plants growing in the shade of taller trees, and the town's coffee has a strong reputation in Mexico.

The center is built around Parque Ignacio Zaragoza, with the parish church of San Antonio de Padua and the municipal palace facing it. From 1902 until the 1950s a narrow-gauge railway linked Huatusco with Córdoba to carry coffee and passengers, and the town still has the feel of a regional market center, busy on weekends with people from the surrounding villages.

Most visitors come for the coffee: several farms around Huatusco open their doors to show how the beans are grown, picked, dried, and roasted, and end with a tasting. The hills nearby also hide waterfalls, a bamboo forest, and trails through cloud forest. On clear days the Pico de Orizaba shows itself to the west.
