  1. 1 Boats anchored in the turquoise bay of Zihuatanejo below green hills, Guerrero

    Zihuatanejo

A fishing town turned beach resort on a sheltered Pacific bay in Guerrero, next to the planned resort of Ixtapa. Its waterfront walkway, fish market, and beaches like La Ropa keep a slower, small-town feel.

When to go: Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr

  2. 2 Pink towers of Santa Prisca rising above the rooftops and plaza of Taxco, Guerrero

    Taxco

Taxco tumbles down a steep hillside in Guerrero, a maze of white houses, red roofs, and cobbled lanes. It made its fortune in silver and is still Mexico's silver-jewelry capital. The ornate pink-stone church of Santa Prisca dominates the main plaza.

When to go: Jan, Feb, Mar, Dec

  3. 3 Stone facade and atrium of the former Santa María church that houses Cuauhtémoc's tomb, Ixcateopan, Guerrero

    Ixcateopan

Ixcateopan de Cuauhtémoc is a small mountain town in northern Guerrero, 36 kilometers west of Taxco, surrounded by pine, cedar and walnut forest. Its streets are paved with unpolished white marble, and many garden walls are built of it too. People come to see the former church of Santa María de la Asunción, now a museum tied to the local tradition that Cuauhtémoc, the last Mexica emperor, is buried here, and to walk the archaeological site at the southern edge of town.

When to go: Jan, Feb, Mar, Dec
