Archaeological site 43 km southwest of Casas Grandes
Cliff dwellings in a canyon cave with a giant pot-shaped adobe granary, an INAH site in the Valle de las Cuevas; free entry.
Cueva de la Olla is one of the best places to see how the people of the Paquimé world lived in the mountains. Inside a wide, shallow cave in the Valle de las Cuevas, in the foothills of the Sierra Madre southwest of Casas Grandes, stand the remains of about seven adobe rooms and the structure that gives the site its name: a huge granary shaped like a clay pot.
The granary is about three and a half meters tall and two and a half meters wide, built of coiled grass and mud and rising almost to the cave ceiling. Archaeologists believe it held enough stored food to carry a small community, perhaps around 30 people, through the dry months. The rooms show the same building style as Paquimé, including its characteristic T-shaped doorways.
The valley around it has other cave dwellings, and a stream nearby made farming possible. It is a quiet, remote place with few visitors, which is a big part of the appeal.
What to see and do
Stand beside the pot-shaped granary and look up to where it nearly meets the cave roof.
Spot the T-shaped doorways in the adobe rooms, a signature of Paquimé building.
Bring a flashlight for the darker corners of the cave.
Walk the valley to see other cliff dwellings from a distance.
Getting there
The site is roughly 50 to 60 kilometers southwest of Casas Grandes. Take the road toward Mesa del Huracán to about kilometer 60, where a turnoff leads to the Casa Blanca ranch, then follow a dirt road for several kilometers to the site; allow around an hour and a half each way and use a high-clearance vehicle. INAH lists it as open Tuesday to Sunday during daytime hours, with free entry. There are no services, so bring water and food.
