Landmark 2 km east of Coatepec
A printmaking center in the old hacienda of La Orduña, where artists work in lithography, woodcut and handmade paper.
Just east of Coatepec, in the village of La Orduña, an old hacienda has become one of Mexico's best-known printmaking workshops. The Hacienda de La Orduña dates back to the colonial era; from the 18th century it grew sugarcane, later switched to coffee, and also produced citrus, like many estates in this valley.
Since 2005 its buildings have housed La Ceiba Gráfica, a nonprofit center for graphic arts. Artists from Mexico and abroad come for residencies to work in traditional lithography on Mexican marble stones, Japanese moku hanga woodblock printing, and etching, and the workshop also makes paper by hand. Alongside the studios there is a library, a children's education area, and spaces for exhibitions.
For a visitor it is a chance to see an old coffee hacienda in use, watch printmakers at work, and perhaps take a class.
