Town 4 km southeast of Xico
A quiet coffee town next door, home of Radio Teocelo, founded in 1965 and one of Mexico's oldest community radio stations.
Teocelo is a coffee town about five kilometers southeast of Xico, set on the same green slopes below the Cofre de Perote. It is smaller and quieter than its Pueblo Mágico neighbors, with about ten thousand people in town, steep streets, and fincas all around. Its coffee has a strong reputation, and the hills are planted with coffee bushes shaded by fruit trees.
The town has an unusual claim to fame: Radio Teocelo, which went on the air in September 1965 and is considered Mexico's oldest community radio station, a title it shares with a station in Huayacocotla. For four decades it was the only citizen-run station in the country, and it still broadcasts to hundreds of villages in the region.
In the center you will find the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the municipal palace, built in 1921. Through August the town celebrates its patron, the Virgin of the Assumption, with concerts, costume parades, processions, and carpets of colored sawdust laid on the streets.

Getting there
Teocelo is roughly 15 minutes by car or taxi from Xico, and about 20 minutes from Coatepec. The Cascada de Texolo lies between Xico and Teocelo, so the two are easy to combine in one outing. Ask in Xico about local buses or shared taxis if you are not driving.
