Landmark 3 km southeast of Cocula
A former sugar hacienda just south of Cocula with stone walls, patios, gardens and old stables you can walk through.
San Diego is a former sugar hacienda about 4 km south of the center of Cocula, the closest of the town's historic estates and an easy short outing. Sugar cane was one of the great crops of the valley in colonial and 19th-century times, and haciendas like this one grew it, milled it and turned it into sugar and piloncillo, alongside raising cattle and grain.
The ex-hacienda keeps much of its old character: thick stone walls, wide patios, corridors, gardens and the stables, which visitors can walk through. It is a quiet place, without the polish of a hotel hacienda, and that is part of its charm.
Together with La Sauceda and Cofradía de la Luz, San Diego is one of the old estates that help explain Cocula's past. The rural world of the haciendas, with its work songs, fiestas and musicians, is where the mariachi tradition that made Cocula famous took shape.
