Hot springs 17 km east of Cocula
A town of thermal water parks 25 minutes east, led by Chimulco, with warm pools of about 35–37 °C, next to the Laguna de Atotonilco.
Villa Corona is a town on Highway 80, about 20 km east of Cocula, that has built its life around hot water. Several thermal springs rise at the edge of town, and they feed a group of balnearios, family water parks with warm pools, slides and green areas that fill up with day-trippers from Guadalajara on weekends.
The largest and best known is Chimulco, whose wells give mineral water of around 35 to 37 °C, warm enough to swim in comfortably all year. Las Delicias and the Agua Caliente vacation center are other well-established options nearby. Expect a lively, family atmosphere rather than a quiet spa: music, food stalls and children everywhere, especially on Sundays and holidays.
Next to town lies the Laguna de Atotonilco, a wetland declared a Ramsar site of international importance in 2006, where more than 250 bird species have been recorded. In recent dry years the lagoon has nearly dried up, and a restoration project to clean its feeder canals began in 2026, so check conditions if birdwatching is your main reason to come.
What to see and do
Spend a day in the thermal pools at Chimulco, the biggest of the water parks.
Try Las Delicias or the Agua Caliente center for a smaller, quieter option.
Go on a weekday if you want the pools without the weekend crowds.
Look for waterbirds at the Laguna de Atotonilco when it has water, especially in the winter months.
