About Espita

Espita is a town in northeastern Yucatán, about 50 kilometers from Valladolid and not far from Ek Balam and Tizimín. In the 19th century its maize and sugar haciendas made it prosperous enough to earn the nickname the Athens of Yucatán. The colonial church of San José anchors the center, and the biggest celebration runs from December 19 to 29 in honor of the Christ Child, with processions, guild dances, vaquerías and bullfights.
