About Metepec
Metepec sits right beside Toluca, at the foot of the Cerro de los Magueyes, the hill that gives it its Nahuatl name. It is a pottery town, known above all for its brightly painted clay Trees of Life, and workshops in neighborhoods such as Santiaguito, Santa Cruz, San Mateo and Espíritu Santo open their doors to visitors. People also come for the 16th-century Franciscan monastery of San Juan Bautista, the walk up to the Calvario chapel, the herbal liqueur called garañona, and the Quimera arts festival each October.
