Landmark 44 km northwest of Maní
A henequen hacienda that still processes sisal fiber with its old machinery, with a mule-drawn cart ride and an underground cenote.
Sotuta de Peón is a restored henequen hacienda in the municipality of Tecoh, north of Maní, run as a living museum of the industry that made Yucatán rich in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In those years the peninsula supplied much of the world's hard fiber for rope and twine, and haciendas like this one were the base of that wealth.
The tour follows the whole process. You see the fields of agave-like henequen plants, ride in a truck, a wooden platform pulled by mules on narrow-gauge rails as in the boom years, and visit the machine house, where the old decorticating machine strips the fiber from the leaves. Then come the drying area, the press that packs the fiber into bales and the workshop where it is turned into finished products, along with the main house and a traditional Maya house.
The visit ends at Dzul-Ha, a cave cenote on the property with clear turquoise water among stone formations, where you can swim. The hacienda also has a restaurant, and the tour takes most of a morning or afternoon.
