Town 10 km south of Maní
The fruit-growing center of southern Yucatán, with a big, busy market of oranges, mangoes and local produce.
Oxkutzcab is a market town about 10 kilometers southwest of Maní, at the foot of the low Puuc hills, and it is known across Yucatán as the state's orchard. The red soils around it are planted with oranges and other citrus, mangoes, avocados, papayas and vegetables, and most of that harvest passes through the town.
The heart of town is the 20 de Noviembre market, opened in 1972, where farmers and traders pile up fruit and produce from early morning; it is a lively place to buy fresh juice, local fruit and a cheap breakfast. Across the square stands the church and former convent of San Francisco de Asís, whose altarpieces hold finely carved and painted images from the early 18th century.
Oxkutzcab's big event is the Feria de la Naranja, the orange fair held every December since 1985, with sculptures made of oranges and competitions for the sweetest fruit. The town is also the gateway to the Loltún caves and the road south to Labná and the Puuc Route.
