About Choco-Story Uxmal
Choco-Story Uxmal is a cacao and chocolate museum on the grounds of the old Hacienda Uxmal, directly across the road from the entrance to the Uxmal archaeological site, on the Mérida–Campeche road via Muna about an hour south of Mérida. The building was a sugar hacienda in the 16th century; today the museum winds through it and the surrounding vegetation, so a visit is partly a walk in the woods.
The tour runs through six themed rooms: the Maya and cacao, how cacao was discovered and grown, a traditional Maya house, a tasting room where chocolate is prepared in front of you the traditional way, with spices and chile, the journey of cacao to Europe, and the recent history and globalisation of chocolate. Maya rituals linked to cacao are shown along the way.
There is more than chocolate. The grounds hold a refuge for rescued animals, a meliponary where the native stingless Melipona bees are kept, a children's play area and workshops where you make your own artisanal chocolate. Next door stands the Planetario Maya, and the ruins of Uxmal are a few steps away, so the museum fits easily into a day on the Ruta Puuc, ideally after the site, when the midday heat makes shade welcome.
How to get to Choco-Story Uxmal
Drive from Mérida: 1 h 15 min, 80 km
From Mérida, take Federal Highway 261 toward Umán and continue south; after Muna follow the signs for Uxmal. The museum is directly opposite the entrance to the Uxmal ruins, at km 78 of the Mérida–Campeche road via Muna, about an hour from Mérida. Many Uxmal day tours from Mérida include it.
