About Teabo
Teabo is a village about 11 kilometers east of Maní, on the Convent Route of southern Yucatán. Its landmark is the parish church and former convent of San Pedro y San Pablo, built in the 17th century and painted a deep red that makes it stand out from a distance against the green of the surrounding country.
The complex follows the pattern of the Franciscan missions of Yucatán, with a broad church, a former convent alongside and an atrium in front. Inside there is a carved altarpiece, and next to the main church is a chapel that once served the Maya population. Remains of a large Maya cemetery have also been found near the church, a reminder that, like Maní, Teabo was an important Maya town before the Spanish arrived.
The village is quiet and residential, with a main square in front of the church. It fits naturally into a loop from Maní through Teabo, Chumayel and Mama, four colonial churches within a few kilometers of one another.
