About Cenote Pool Uinic
Cenote Pool Uinic is a small cave cenote in Homún, the town about 45 km southeast of Mérida that has become the centre of cenote swimming in Yucatán. It lies, quite literally, in the backyard of a local family: you walk through a wide garden of trees and fruit trees to the entrance, then go down stone stairs into the cave.
Inside, the water is shallow and clear, the walls are hung with stalactites and stalagmites, and a tree grows from inside the cenote up through the opening to the surface. The cave is lit, which is why the family also opens it in the evening. At the far end a cave continues underwater; certified divers can explore it with a diver who knows the site.
Infrastructure is very limited, which is part of the charm: this is a family-run swimming hole rather than a park. It is often included in the mototaxi circuits of Homún's cenotes, and can also be visited by appointment.

Drive from Mérida: 55 min, 50 km
Pool Uinic is in Homún, about 45 km southeast of Mérida. Shared vans leave Mérida for Homún about every hour (around 45 pesos each way; the last one back leaves around 6 pm). In Homún, mototaxi drivers offer cenote circuits of about three cenotes in three hours; ask for Pool Uinic, or arrange a visit with the family directly.
