About Hacienda Kampepén
Hacienda Kampepén is a former henequen estate on the outskirts of Homún, the cenote town about 50 kilometers southeast of Mérida. The entrance is roughly a kilometer east of the town center along Calle 19. It should not be confused with Kampepén in the municipality of Mérida, a tiny locality south of the city that shares the name; the hacienda with the cenotes that day tours advertise is this one, in Homún.
Like many estates in this part of Yucatán, Kampepén grew henequen during the boom years of the fiber, and once that trade faded most of its buildings fell into ruin. It has since been opened to visitors as an eco-tourist park. You can walk and photograph the ruins of the old casco, and the hacienda church has been restored, keeping its original façade and a garden in front.
The main draws are underground. Cenote La Noria is fully enclosed and reached by wooden stairs that go down a good distance; Cenote Chenké is semi-open, easier to get into, with clear blue water and small harmless fish. The Kixné grotto is a large cave with artificial lighting, rock formations, galleries, a narrow cenote and ancient paintings on its walls. Around them are walking trails, bicycles for rent, and areas for picnics and camping. A glamping site, Hameki, sits about 500 meters away and includes the hacienda tour in its stays.
How to get to Hacienda Kampepén
Drive from Mérida: 55 min, 54 km
Homún is about 50 kilometers from Mérida. By car, leave Mérida on the highway toward Cancún, turn off toward Tahmek at about kilometer 40, then head south through Hocabá to Homún. In Homún, follow Calle 19 east about 1 kilometer to the hacienda entrance. Shared vans to Homún leave from Calle 52 between 65 and 67 in downtown Mérida roughly every hour for about 45 pesos each way; the last one from Mérida goes around 7 pm and the last back from Homún around 6 pm, and they may not run if there aren't enough passengers.
