About Cenotes Santa Bárbara

Cenotes Santa Bárbara is a cenote park on the edge of Homún, about 45 km southeast of Mérida, where four cenotes share a single entrance and are close enough to swim in all of them in one visit. From the reception you ride to the cenotes by bicycle, by combi or on the Expreso Santa Bárbara, a small motorised train, and a life jacket is included with the ticket.

Each cenote is different. Cascabel is a closed cave: you squeeze through an opening about a metre wide and go down three metres of stairs to a platform above a vault some 26 by 24 metres, with clear blue, artificially lit water up to about 18 metres deep. Chaksikín is semi-open, under a ten-metre vault of stalactites, columns and curtains, with tree roots hanging into the water; it suits all ages. Xooch is also semi-open, with greenish turquoise water that turns very clear a couple of metres down, where divers report visibility of around 40 metres and a fallen tree lies on the bottom. Pool Cocom is open to the sky, a 30-by-30-metre pool about 15 metres deep ringed by vegetation, with concrete stairs and an elevator for people with limited mobility.

The park is set up for families: two restaurants, one serving Yucatecan dishes such as poc chuc with handmade tortillas and a snack bar, a craft shop, showers and changing rooms, free parking and Wi-Fi, with certified lifeguards at the cenotes. It makes an easy, well-organised introduction to the Homún cenotes.
