San Pedro Nohpat

San Pedro Nohpat is a former hacienda village on the northern side of the city of Kanasín, about 1.5 km north of Kanasín's main square and close to the eastern edge of Mérida. Once a separate settlement, it has been swallowed by Kanasín's growth and now sits inside the city's urban area. The name honours Saint Peter; Nohpat comes from Maya. At the 1990 census it still counted 646 inhabitants as a separate locality.

The village grew up around Hacienda San Pedro Nohpat, which had its heyday during the henequen boom. Like other estates of the time it issued its own tokens, which name the hacienda as the property of V. Escalante S. and are now of interest to collectors. Together with Teya, it is one of the two old haciendas the municipality lists as part of its architectural heritage.

The hacienda has been remodelled and works as a hotel, on Calle 22 in the San Pedro district of Kanasín. From the street you can see its yellow chapel behind a gate, the arcaded front of the main house, and the tall brick chimney of the old machine house rising above long white walls. It is a short stop if you are in Kanasín for the Candelaria festival or on your way to Hacienda Teya on the Cancún highway.
