About Kanasín

Kanasín is a city and municipal seat just east of Mérida, about 5 km from the state capital and now joined to it as part of the Mérida metropolitan area. With 139,753 people at the 2020 census it is the second-largest city in Yucatán after Mérida, though it only received city status in 2007. Together with Umán it has become an industrial corridor for the state, and the welcome arch on the road in proudly calls it "la capital del panucho", the capital of the panucho, the fried tortilla stuffed with beans and piled with toppings.

The town was probably founded in the mid-16th century under the Spanish encomienda system; colonial records mention it as a visiting chapel by 1588, under the name Tikanalsín. The name is usually traced to a local tree with reddish flowers. Encomienda records from the 18th century list around two hundred Maya in the charge of successive holders, and Kanasín became the head of its own municipality after independence. The land around it was henequen country, and old haciendas such as Teya, San Pedro Nohpat and San Antonio Tehuitz still stand in the municipality; in 2018 a Maya archaeological site called Xiol was found within its limits.

The centre of Kanasín is a broad main park with a kiosk, the yellow 17th-century main church and the arcaded municipal palace with its clock tower. The best time to come is for the Candelaria festival, which runs from 29 January to 2 February and ends with a procession of the Virgin. It has been famous since the early 20th century; newspapers from the 1920s describe vaquerías at the municipal palace, and today the celebration is about panuchos, chaya water and jarana music rather than the tamales eaten elsewhere in Mexico on Candlemas. The town also celebrates the Immaculate Conception on 8 December and holds a popular carnival in March.
