About Tekit

Tekit is a town about 17 kilometers north of Maní, and it calls itself the capital of the guayabera, the pleated, pocketed shirt that is formal wear across Yucatán and much of the Caribbean. Sewing is the town's main trade: there are around 350 workshops of every size, and a large share of the population works in clothing, making guayaberas, hipiles, embroidered blouses and dresses, and also uniforms and other garments.

Shops line the streets around the center, and prices are often well below those in Mérida. Tekit's guayaberas are sold across Mexico and exported to places like Belize, the Dominican Republic, Spain and Miami. The town also holds a Feria de la Guayabera, which in recent years has taken place twice a year.

Tekit is also a stop on the Convent Route. Its parish church of San Antonio de Padua, from the 16th century, is surprisingly large for the town, and its façade has niches filled with sculptures of saints. A visit here easily combines shopping with a look at the church.
