Cenote 35 km southwest of Izamal
A Maya town ringed by dozens of cenotes, from open pools to caves, visited with local mototaxi guides.
Homún is a farming town southwest of Izamal that sits on the Ring of Cenotes, an arc of sinkholes across northwest Yucatán linked to the rim of the Chicxulub impact crater. Its municipality has more cenotes open to visitors than almost anywhere else in the state, and over the past two decades the town has built its tourism around them, mostly through small family-run sites.
The variety is the draw. Some cenotes are open pools under the trees, some are semi-open with a hole in the roof, and others are full caves where you climb down ladders into still water lit by a single shaft of light. Well-known ones include Santa Bárbara, a park with several cenotes joined by a trail you ride by bike; Yaxbacaltún, a large open cenote with a restaurant; and Canunchén, a small cave cenote with wooden stairs.
The town is also known for defending them: in 2018 residents went to court against a large pig farm, arguing that it threatened the groundwater feeding the cenotes. Local guides with mototaxis wait near the main square and the town entrance, and they know which cenotes are quiet that day.

Getting there
From Izamal, Homún is about 50 minutes by car to the southwest, by way of Kantunil and Huhí. Many cenotes are on dirt roads outside town, so a mototaxi guide from the center is the easiest way to get around. Most charge a separate entry fee per cenote and many take cash only; showering before swimming is required and life jackets are often provided or mandatory.
