About Cenote Yaxbacaltún
Cenote Yaxbacaltún, run as the Parador Ecoturístico Cenote Yaxbacaltún, is one of the larger cenotes around Homún, the cenote town about 45 km southeast of Mérida. It is a semi-open sinkhole: stairs lead down about 15 metres (49 ft) to the water, which is itself around 15 metres deep.
This is a place for proper swimming and a bit of adventure. There are platforms to jump from and a rope swing over the water, and rappelling down into the cenote is offered for thrill-seekers. Life jackets are included in the entry fee. Up top there are toilets, a simple restaurant area, hammocks and a resting area in the trees, and visitors may also bring their own food and drinks.
The state tourism board suggests allowing about two hours. Like Homún's other cenotes, it can be reached on your own or as part of a mototaxi circuit from the town.

Drive from Mérida: 1 h, 53 km
Yaxbacaltún is in Homún, about 45 km southeast of Mérida (around 75 minutes by road, according to the state tourism board). Shared vans leave Mérida for Homún about every hour; in town, mototaxis offer cenote circuits. Contact: +52 999 216 6950.
