Town 15 km southwest of Motul
A town famous for its hammock weavers; buy straight from family workshops and see the looms at work.
Tixkokob is a town about 15 kilometers southwest of Motul, on the way to Mérida, and it is one of the best-known places in Yucatán for hammocks. Its name is usually translated from Maya as "place of poisonous snakes," but what it is known for today is weaving.
The Yucatecan hammock, woven from fine cotton or nylon thread into a dense mesh, is the bed of choice in many homes across the peninsula, and Tixkokob has more than thirty workshops making them, besides many families who weave at home. Making a single hammock takes from about a week to three weeks depending on size and style, and elaborate pieces can take much longer. Both women and men weave, often on large wooden frames set up in the shade of a patio tree, and they will show you how the threads are strung and knotted.
Buying here means you can see the quality of the work and buy directly from the people who make it. Ask about the size and the thread: a good hammock should be wide and tightly woven. The town's main square and church are pleasant for a short stop on the way between Motul and Mérida or Aké.
