Viewpoint 34 km northwest of Motul
A three-level wooden lookout on the coastal road where you can watch flamingos feeding in the lagoon, best early or late in the day.
Uaymitún is a stretch of coast between Chicxulub Puerto and Telchac, and its tourist stop, run by Yucatán's tourism authorities, has a three-level wooden lookout tower at about kilometer 29 of the coastal highway. From the top you look over the lagoon and mangroves that lie behind the beach, where flocks of American flamingos and other waterbirds come to feed.
The flamingos are not always in the same place, and their numbers change with the season and the water levels, but this lagoon is one of the most reliable spots near Mérida to see them without taking a boat. Early morning and late afternoon are usually best, when the birds are active and the light is soft. Besides flamingos you may see herons, egrets, pelicans and shorebirds. Binoculars help a lot, as the birds keep their distance.
Across the highway is a quiet beach. Drivers should go slowly along this road: flamingos sometimes cross or fly low over it, and several have been hit by cars in recent years. The lookout is easy to combine with Xcambó and Telchac Puerto in a day along the coast.
What to see and do
Climb the three-level lookout to scan the lagoon for flamingos.
Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon for the most birds.
