About Malecón de Progreso

The malecón is Progreso's seafront promenade, the stretch of Calle 19 that runs along the beach in front of the town center, officially named Malecón Romeo Frías Bobadilla. The traditional malecón covers roughly a kilometer of shore, from around Calle 60 to Calle 80, between the old fiscal pier at its western end and the big Progreso letters to the east. It is about 35 km north of Mérida, and for most visitors from the city it is the first thing they see of the coast.

The promenade was rebuilt in three stages, from Calle 60 to 70, from 78 to 80 and finally the 401 meters between Calles 70 and 78, finished in mid-2022 with new paving, lighting, benches and bike lanes. It has been closed to cars since then and is now entirely for walking; in late 2025 local business owners came out in favor of keeping it that way, saying the closure had raised their sales and made the street feel safer. The beach in front has been losing sand: in September 2025 the town spread 720 cubic meters of sand dredged at Sisal along the eastern part, pushing the waterline back by up to three meters.

Along the way are monuments to the town's founder, Juan Miguel Castro, and to the pier's Guinness record, seafood restaurants and cafés, ice cream and marquesita stands, and the Museo del Meteorito, opened in 2022 near the eastern end, recognisable by the giant dinosaur on its roof. Past the pier, a short boardwalk known as the Chocolate Pier links the traditional malecón with the Malecón Internacional, a newer and longer promenade heading west with rides, a skate park, sports courts, bike rentals and the skeleton of a whale that stranded on the beach in 2006. The malecón is busiest in the evening, on weekends, in the July and August holidays and whenever a cruise ship is in.
