Dzidzilché

Dzidzilché lies some 26 km north of Mérida and is one of that municipality's subcomisarías, part of the group of former hacienda villages on the western side of the Mérida–Progreso highway. Its Maya name, usually rendered as honey tree, belongs to a native plant, Gymnopodium floribundum. A different Dzidzilché exists in Tekom municipality, and the two are separate places. The 2020 census recorded 267 residents here, down from 385 in 1900.

A hacienda gave rise to the village, and like most estates around Mérida it grew maize first and henequen later. Under the agrarian reform that President Lázaro Cárdenas decreed in 1937, its land was turned into an ejido, while the hacienda buildings stayed in private hands. Only pieces of them remain: a stone wall, a pair of gateposts and an arched ruin on the outskirts.

In the middle of Dzidzilché are a small church with a bell gable, a park, the comisaría building, a sports field, a court, and both a kindergarten and an elementary school. Nothing here is aimed at tourists, so the village takes little time and is easiest to see on a loop through the comisarías north of Mérida, along with Kikteil, around 2 km south, and Suytunchén, where the restored hacienda now hosts events.
