About Gran Museo del Mundo Maya
The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya is Mérida's large museum of Maya culture, on Calle 60 Norte in the north of the city, next to the Siglo XXI convention centre on the old Cordemex industrial site and close to the ring road exit for Progreso. It opened in 2012, with its official inauguration on 21 December, the date that closed a cycle of the Maya Long Count. The building, by Grupo 4A Arquitectos, is inspired by the ceiba, the sacred tree of Maya cosmology: its upper volume is wrapped in a green lattice of steel that recalls the tree's crown.
The museum covers about 22,600 m², with some 2,000 m² of permanent galleries and 600 m² for temporary shows. The permanent exhibition, built around about 800 archaeological pieces that came from the Palacio Cantón regional museum, runs backwards in time: it starts with the Maya of today, moves to the Maya of the colonial and recent past, and ends with the ancient Maya, their society, cosmology, art and science. A visit takes about two hours.
The building has ramps, lifts, adapted toilets and free wheelchair loans, and parking is free. It has also been controversial: the project committed the state to payments of about 143 million pesos a year for 20 years, which critics call excessive. Whatever the debate, it is the most complete introduction to the Maya world in the city and a good first stop before visiting the archaeological sites.

Drive from Mérida: 10 min, 9 km
The museum is at Calle 60 Norte 299 E, Unidad Revolución, in the north of Mérida beside the Siglo XXI convention centre, near the ring road (periférico) exit toward Progreso. From the centro it is a straight run north up Calle 60 by car or taxi. Parking is free.
