San Antonio Hool

San Antonio Hool is a subcomisaría of Mérida municipality, about 16 km from the city centre on the north side of the city, a couple of kilometres from the stone-carving village of Dzityá and a little east of Cheumán. The name joins the village's patron, Saint Anthony of Padua, with the Maya word hool, 'hole'; it is sometimes misspelled San Antonio Ool. It is a small place: 180 people lived here at the 2020 census, slightly more than the 144 counted in 1900.

The village grew around a henequen hacienda. Haciendas came late to Yucatán compared with the rest of Mexico, because of the thin soil and the lack of water for irrigation, and the area around Mérida was one of the first where they spread, first growing maize and later henequen. After the agrarian reform decreed by President Lázaro Cárdenas in 1937, the hacienda lands became an ejido, a communally held farm, while the main house and its buildings stayed in private hands, as happened across the henequen zone.

Those buildings still dominate the village: a long stone wall with old gateposts, the main house set back behind it and a tall brick chimney from the machine house that can be seen from the road. Across from them is a small park with a basketball court. There is also an archaeological site with the same name close to the village. There are no visitor services; San Antonio Hool is a short stop combined with Dzityá's workshops and the hacienda at Cheumán.
