About Tixcuytún

Tixcuytún, or San Luis Tixcuytún, is a small subcomisaría of Mérida municipality about 14 km north of the city centre, east of the highway to Progreso. It borders Temozón Norte to the west and Cholul to the south. The village had 578 inhabitants in the 2020 census. The meaning of its Maya name is uncertain: it is usually read as "bird standing on a stone", from tix, bird, and tun, stone, while the city's own list of comisarías gives "place where snakes are born". It should not be confused with the better-known Tixcuytún in Tekax municipality, in the south of the state, which has a very different church.

The village grew from a hacienda whose patron saint is San Luis Rey de Francia, Saint Louis, King of France, celebrated every 25 August; the village church is dedicated to him. Much of the old estate survives as stone ruins: photographs from 2012 show the old church, with a small belfry over its gable, and parts of the hacienda standing roofless among trees, with arched doorways and thick rubble walls open to the sky.

Around these remains, Tixcuytún is a small village with a yellow casa comisarial, a children's park and a sports court, a kindergarten run by CONAFE, the Luz y Verdad primary school and a municipal children's dining room. It is a short drive from Cholul and the northern edge of Mérida, and for visitors it is mainly of interest for the hacienda ruins and the August fiesta.
