About Sac Nicté

Sac Nicté is a subcomisaría of Mérida municipality about 25 km from the city centre, east of the highway from Mérida to the port of Progreso. Its Maya name means 'white flower' and recalls Sac Nicté, the princess of a well-known Maya legend. It shares the name with other villages in Yucatán, including ones in Izamal and Umán. At the 2020 census it had 387 inhabitants, its highest figure on record; in 1910 it had 308.

The village grew around a henequen hacienda that flourished during the boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Like many large estates of the time, it issued its own tokens, or fichas, to pay its workers; hacienda tokens like these are sought by collectors for their design. After President Lázaro Cárdenas's agrarian reform of 1937, the hacienda's fields became an ejido, worked in common by the villagers, while the main buildings remained private property.

Today several hacienda buildings still stand in and around the village, some roofless and overgrown, with arched doorways and old wells. The village church, with crenellated walls and an arched front, is listed as abandoned. Around the main park are the comisaría building, a primary school and a baseball and football field. There are no visitor services; Sac Nicté makes a short stop on a drive north towards Progreso, combined with the other old hacienda villages along the highway.
