Temozón Norte

Temozón Norte is a small locality about 13 kilometers north-northeast of downtown Mérida, administered as a sub-comisaría of the municipality of Mérida. It sits on flat land about 9 meters above sea level and today is counted as one of the city's suburbs. The 2010 census found 280 people living here, up from 105 in 1900. The Maya name is usually glossed as "place of the whirlwind"; "Norte" was added to tell it apart from other places in Yucatán called Temozón.

Like many villages around Mérida, Temozón Norte began as a henequen hacienda. Yucatán's haciendas took shape relatively late, from the end of the 17th century and through the 18th, and Temozón Norte became one that grew henequen. After the agrarian reform decreed under Lázaro Cárdenas in 1937, the hacienda's land was turned into an ejido. The main house, the casco, stayed in private hands.

That casco still stands among large shade trees and now houses an educational institution; a sign on the grounds reads Universidad Autónoma Chapingo. The village also has a small casa comisarial, its local administration building. There is no visitor infrastructure here: it is a quiet residential place rather than an attraction, worth a look mainly if you are curious about how Mérida's old henequen estates have been absorbed by the growing city.
