Cenote 4 km southwest of Valladolid
A deep open cenote on the grounds of an old hacienda just outside Valladolid, with hanging roots and a rope swing.
Cenote Oxmán sits on the grounds of the Hacienda San Lorenzo Oxmán, a colonial-era estate a few kilometers southwest of Valladolid. From the hacienda's old buildings you walk down a stone stairway into a deep, round sinkhole, open to the sky at the top, with long tree roots hanging all the way down to the water.
The water is a deep blue and much of it is too deep to stand in, so life jackets are handed out. A wooden platform with a rope swing lets you launch yourself out over the water, which is the main attraction for many visitors. The light changes through the day as the sun moves across the opening.
The hacienda has turned the rest of the property into a relaxed day spot, with a swimming pool, loungers and a restaurant-bar; some ticket options include a credit for food and drinks. Because it is so close to town and less famous than X'Keken or Suytún, it is often calmer, and it is easy to combine with the Dzitnup cenotes on the same morning.
What to see and do
Swing out over the water on the rope swing and drop into the cenote.
Float in a life jacket under the hanging roots.
Spend the afternoon by the hacienda's pool and restaurant.
Pair it with the Dzitnup cenotes, a few minutes away.
Getting there
From the center of Valladolid it is about 10 minutes by car or taxi southwest along the road to the Hacienda San Lorenzo Oxmán; many people also come by bike. Showering before swimming is required.
