Cenote 15 km north of Valladolid
A large cave cenote near Temozón, lit through a hole in its roof, on a hacienda that also makes and sells agave spirits.
Hubiku, whose Maya name is usually translated as "nest of iguanas," is a cave cenote north of Valladolid, just past the town of Temozón on the road to Ek' Balam. It is a closed cenote: from above you see only an opening in the ground, and stairs take you down into a wide underground chamber, roughly 50 meters across, with the water lit by the sunlight that falls through the hole in the roof.
Roots and vines hang down through the opening, and the limestone walls around the water have stalactites and other formations. A platform and steps make it easy to get in and out, so it works well for people who are not strong swimmers, especially with the life jackets provided.
The cenote belongs to a hacienda that has built a full stop for tour groups, with a buffet restaurant, a shop and a small distillery and museum of agave spirits where you can see the stone mill and taste the drinks. It is on many tour itineraries that combine it with Ek' Balam or Chichén Itzá, so it is quietest early in the morning.
What to see and do
Go down into the cave and swim in the light falling through the roof.
Look for stalactites on the walls around the water.
Visit the hacienda's agave distillery and try a tasting.
Combine it with Ek' Balam on the same trip north.
Getting there
From Valladolid, drive about 20 minutes north on Highway 295 through Temozón and follow the signs to Hubiku. Taxis from Valladolid can combine it with Ek' Balam. Showering before swimming is required.
