Town 11 km south of Valladolid
A Maya village south of Valladolid, held to be the "center of the world" and home to a venerated stone cross; community-run tours.
Xocén is a Maya village about 11 kilometers south of Valladolid where daily life still runs largely in Maya, and it holds a special place in local belief: many people in the region consider it the center of the world. Pilgrims come from across the peninsula to the sanctuary of the Santísima Cruz Tun, a stone cross kept by the community, which is said to have emerged from the earth.
In August 2024 a large ceiba tree in the village fell and its roots tore open the ground, exposing a cenote below. For many residents this echoed an old prophecy about the end of an age, and the community has chosen to protect the cenote rather than open it to tourism. That attitude says a lot about Xocén: it is not a place built for visitors.
What it does offer is community-run tourism. Young people from the village guide birdwatching walks in the surrounding forest and visits that explain milpa farming, traditional houses and local customs. Go with a local guide, ask before taking photos, and treat the cross and its sanctuary as the sacred places they are.
