Nature reserve 9 km southwest of Cuatrociénegas
A clear, spring-fed river near Cuatrociénegas where swimming is allowed, with endemic fish and turtles under the surface.
The Río Mezquites is a channel of warm, crystal-clear spring water that winds through the desert about 15 minutes from Cuatrociénegas. It is the main place in the valley where swimming is still allowed, which makes it the favorite stop on a hot day.
The water is so clear that it plays tricks with depth: pools that look shallow turn out to be over your head, and the sandy bottom seems close enough to touch. Under the surface you can see some of the species that exist only in this valley, including small endemic fish, snails, and turtles. Bringing goggles or a snorkel mask makes a big difference.
The site is run as a balneario with designated swimming areas, and it also offers camping and kayak trips along the channel. Because it is inside the protected area, rules are strict: visitors are asked not to wear sunscreen or repellent in the water, and nothing may be taken, plant or animal. The site closes at 5 pm, so plan the afternoon around it.
What to see and do
Swim in the clear, warm channel in the marked areas.
Snorkel to watch endemic fish, snails, and turtles.
Paddle the river on a kayak tour.
Camp overnight beside the water.
Getting there
Río Mezquites is about 15 minutes from Cuatrociénegas by car, off Federal Highway 30 near Poza Azul, on the same southern route as the dunes and the marble mines. There is an entrance fee and it closes at 5 pm. Skip sunscreen and repellent before swimming, since they harm the ecosystem; wear a long-sleeved shirt instead.
