Town 39 km northeast of Isla Aguada
A laid-back fishing town with a long, calm white-sand beach and a mangrove estuary for boat rides and birdwatching.
Sabancuy is a fishing town of around eight thousand people on the coast road between Isla Aguada and Champotón. It is known in Campeche for its relaxed, slightly bohemian feel and for a beach that runs for about ten kilometers, with fine white sand and shallow, calm, greenish-blue water that suits families with children.
The town sits beside an estuary, the Estero de Sabancuy, lined with mangroves. Boat rides through it are the local outing: herons and cormorants feed along the banks, migratory birds stop here in winter, and the coast is a refuge for the endangered hawksbill turtle. Anglers come for sport fishing, and the breakwater is a spot for snorkeling when the water is clear.
Because most people here live from the sea, the seafood is fresh and simple: look for pescado a la sal, sopa marinera and pompano in the town's restaurants. Accommodation is small-scale, including eco-hostels near the beach, and outside holidays the beach is often almost empty.
