Candelaria is a river town in the southwest of Campeche, set in the basin of the Candelaria river, which winds right past it. It is the only urban center in a municipality of small rural communities, so it serves as the local hub for markets, services, and transport, and since 2024 it has had its own Tren Maya station. Each year the town celebrates its patron, the Virgen de la Candelaria, with religious events, a fair, and cultural activities.
History
The town takes its name from its patron saint, Our Lady of Candelaria, as does the river that shapes the surrounding landscape. Candelaria grew into the head town of its municipality and the main center of commerce and services for the rural communities of this part of southwestern Campeche.
Roads link it with Escárcega, Ciudad del Carmen, and the state capital. In 2024 a Tren Maya station opened on the Palenque to Escárcega section, and the town's inclusion in the Pueblos Mágicos program in 2023 has encouraged new lodging, restaurants, and visitor services.
