About Zona Arqueológica de Pomoná

Pomoná, called Pakbul in its own glyph, was a Late Classic Maya city set on the hills of the lower Usumacinta basin, in the municipality of Tenosique in eastern Tabasco. Farmers stumbled on it in 1959 while surveying land, and INAH studied it between 1986 and 1988. Its position between the upper and lower Usumacinta made it a stop on trade routes to the Gulf plain and to the Petén, and it fought over territory with Palenque, Piedras Negras and La Mar. Inscriptions sometimes show it as an ally of Palenque: a Pomoná king took the throne in 751 under the eye of K'inich Kan Bahlam III. Around 792 Piedras Negras attacked it and took prisoners, who appear on that city's Stela 12.

The settlement is dispersed, about 175 hectares, with six groups of buildings on separate hills. Only the northern one has been explored: thirteen buildings around a plaza closed on three sides, with a low altar and four staircases at its centre. Temple I closes the plaza with a seven-tier pyramid and a circular altar at the foot of its stairway. Building IV is the most complex: its balustrades carried four panels of the sun god Kin, and carved slabs with figures and hieroglyphs were found inside. One relief panel from Pomoná is now in the Rietberg Museum in Zürich.

A small INAH museum stands on the site. It opened in 1991 and shows about 118 pieces from the excavations: stelae, architectural elements, figurines, pottery and stone tools.
