Waterfall 13 km south of Palenque
A 35-meter waterfall dropping into a round jungle pool, with a path that runs behind the curtain of water.
Misol-Há is a single, tall waterfall about 20 kilometers south of Palenque, just off the highway to Ocosingo. The water drops some 35 meters off a cliff into a nearly round pool surrounded by tropical forest, and on a hot day the spray cools the whole clearing.
Its best feature is the trail that runs behind the falls. You can walk under the overhanging rock with the water thundering a few meters in front of you and reach a cave at the far end, where a local guide can take you in by lamplight. The pool below is good for a swim when the water is calm, though it gets rough and murky in the rainy season.
The site is run by the local ejido, with a restaurant and simple cabins. Because it is so close to Palenque and right on the way to Agua Azul, nearly every tour south of Palenque stops here, so it is quietest early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
What to see and do
Walk the path behind the waterfall; it is wet and slippery, so wear shoes with grip.
Visit the cave at the end of the path with a local guide.
Swim in the pool when the water is calm, usually in the dry season.
Stay overnight in the ejido's cabins to have the falls to yourself in the morning.
Getting there
Misol-Há is about 30 minutes from Palenque by car: take Highway 199 toward Ocosingo and turn off at the sign, then follow the side road of about 1.5 km to the falls. Expect to pay small entry fees, sometimes at more than one community checkpoint. Many day tours from Palenque combine it with Agua Clara and Agua Azul; colectivos toward Ocosingo can drop you at the turnoff.
