About Profesor Roberto Barrios

Profesor Roberto Barrios is a lowland jungle village in the municipality of Palenque, about 146 metres above sea level and roughly 31 km by road from Palenque town. The 2020 census counted 1,361 people, more than double the 636 of 1990 and up from 705 in 2000 and 1,173 in 2010. The name honours Roberto Barrios Castro, a leader of the teachers' union and of the national peasant confederation, CNC.

What brings visitors is the river that crosses its lands: the Roberto Barrios waterfalls, five turquoise drops a few metres apart, with a path along the river and pools for swimming. That visit has its own page (see Cascadas de Roberto Barrios, under Palenque); here it is enough to say that the village is the way in and that the falls sit inside an ejido, so ask the ejido members when in doubt.

For anyone passing through the village itself the practicalities are few and simple: there are local food stalls at the entrance, and it helps to carry cash, water shoes and a waterproof bag.

How to get to Profesor Roberto Barrios

Drive from Palenque: 35 min, 31 km

From Palenque it is about 31 km and 35 to 40 minutes by car: leave Palenque on a winding road through jungle and hills and, after roughly 20 minutes, turn onto a side road to the village; the booth where the entrance fee is paid is some 13 km along that side road. A taxi from Palenque costs 600 to 750 pesos one way depending on the driver, and the driver usually watches your belongings while you explore the falls. A colectivo is far cheaper but drops you at the turn-off, so the last 13 km need another ride. I found no scheduled bus to the village: the practical route is to reach Palenque and go on by colectivo, taxi or a guided tour (several include it). Coming from San Cristóbal de las Casas, it is easier to sleep in Palenque and make the trip in a day. Ask about the last return colectivo before you set off.
