Nature reserve 33 km southeast of Candelaria
Clear turquoise springs fed by underground rivers, with palapas and calm water for swimming, about 45 minutes from Candelaria.
Pedro Baranda is a small village south of Candelaria, and it has become known in Campeche for the springs on its edge. Water from underground rivers rises here into a chain of clear pools and channels about three kilometers long, in shades that move from deep blue to turquoise and emerald green, with the bottom visible through the water.
People often compare it with Bacalar's lagoon, and the comparison makes sense when the light hits the water, although Pedro Baranda is far smaller and much less developed. The springs are surrounded by tall trees and jungle vegetation, which keeps the place shaded and cool.
It is a simple, community-run spot with palapas, bathrooms and picnic areas, and the entrance fee has been very low. Most visitors are local families who come to swim, float and spend the day, so weekdays are quiet. If you have a mask and snorkel, bring them: the clear water is the whole point.
What to see and do
Swim and float in the clear spring pools.
Snorkel to see the bottom through the clear water.
Paddle a kayak along the channels if rentals are available.
Rent a palapa and spend the day with a picnic.
