Town 62 km southeast of Loreto
A remote fishing village with turquoise coves at the end of a rough mountain dirt road; best with a high-clearance vehicle.
Agua Verde is a fishing village of roughly a hundred people on the Sea of Cortez, about 100 kilometers south of Loreto, and it is one of the most beautiful and remote spots on this coast. It sits on a bay of emerald-green water ringed by rocky headlands and small beaches, with the Sierra de la Giganta rising behind it.
There is little here in the way of tourist services, and that is the appeal. Visitors come to camp on the beach, swim and snorkel in the coves, paddle kayaks along the shore and fish with local boats. Many multi-day sea kayak trips along the coast south of Loreto pass through or end here.
Getting there is an adventure in itself. The road leaves the highway in the mountains and winds down to the sea on a long, steep and bumpy dirt track with tight curves and big views over the coast.
What to see and do
Camp on the beach and wake up to the bay's green water.
Snorkel and swim in the rocky coves around the village.
Paddle a kayak along the coast, or hire a local panga to fish.
Eat fresh fish at the village's small restaurants.
Getting there
From Loreto, drive south on Highway 1 into the mountains for roughly 57 kilometers and take the signed road to Agua Verde. The first stretch is paved, but the last 30 kilometers or so are slow, steep, rough dirt; a high-clearance vehicle is best, and do not drive it at night. Allow two to three hours from Loreto. Boats from Puerto Escondido are another option.
