About San Dionisio Pueblo Viejo

Ikoots (Huave) tradition holds that the island of Pueblo Viejo carried the first religious temple of that culture, built for Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, which is why it is remembered as the old capital of the Huave people of the Isthmus. Today the community of San Dionisio Pueblo Viejo, part of the municipality of San Dionisio del Mar, has 106 residents (93 in 2010 and 82 in 2005) and about 30 homes. It lies roughly 9 km south-west of the municipal seat, on the southern part of the island, 7 to 9 m above sea level depending on the source.

Life revolves around the water. Fishing is the main activity and, as a recent report puts it, the sea decides each family's day. About 76% of residents identify as Indigenous and 43% speak Ikoots, the Huave language, which is unrelated to any other. For some twenty years the electricity supply was unreliable; in 2025 the national power utility CFE installed 73 solar systems with batteries, so families can now keep fish fresh and use the internet to arrange sales and boat transport. Cerro Tile Me, 184 m high, rises 1.8 km away.

Go prepared. There is no lodging in the community (the nearest is 29 km away or more), restaurants are in San Dionisio del Mar, and only 30% of residents have a cell phone, so signal is scarce. The climate is warm (annual mean 26.4 °C) with summer rain, June being the wettest month.

How to get to San Dionisio Pueblo Viejo

Drive from Juchitán: 1 h 10 min, 52 km

San Dionisio Pueblo Viejo is on an island, and the normal way in is by boat across the bocabarra that separates the Laguna Superior from the Laguna Inferior. Boats run on no published timetable: ask in San Dionisio del Mar (the seat, on the peninsula between the two lagoons), where the community landing known as El Faro stands. From Juchitán de Zaragoza (ADO terminal on highway 190), the way into San Dionisio del Mar is a dirt road; ask in Juchitán for transport there.

Overland, in the dry season a sand strip, the Santa Teresa bar, joins the island to the mainland; it belongs to Juchitán, and a dirt track runs from it to Álvaro Obregón. That route depends on the season and on whether the bocabarra is open or closed, and it sometimes floods, so confirm the road in Álvaro Obregón or San Dionisio del Mar before going. We found no buses or named colectivos to the community. From Oaxaca, the first-class terminal is on Calzada Niños Héroes de Chapultepec; the bus takes you to Juchitán, not to the island.
