About Tamazulápam del Espíritu Santo

Tamazulápam del Espíritu Santo sits in the Sierra Mixe, part of Oaxaca's Sierra Norte, at about 2,040 m. The 2020 census counted 3,020 people, nearly 96% identifying as Indigenous and almost 79% speaking an Indigenous language, Mixe. The climate is cool and wet: about 15 °C a year and over 1,400 mm of rain. Around town rise Cerro Cuatro Palos, Chupa Rosa and Palo de Águila, and the Tigre and Salinas rivers run nearby.

The name blends Nahuatl with Christian devotion: tamazul, "toad", and lapam, "place", plus the Holy Spirit, the patron. The land title was issued in 1712 and the parish church dates from 1600, although two towers and a clock were added in the 2000s. The cemetery is from 1822. In 1844 it was recorded as an outlying settlement of the Ayutla parish, and in 1891 it got its own town council. The primary school opened in 1933 and the secondary school in 1972.

The main fiesta honours the Holy Spirit and has no fixed date: it falls in mid-May or the first week of June, and Santa Rosa de Lima is celebrated in late August to early September. Since 2005 the town has hosted the Campeonato Regional Mixe basketball tournament, bringing teams from the region's 19 municipalities. Typical dishes are machucado de papa, caldo de mixe and tamales de amarillo; fiestas call for pulque-based tepache. There is no lodging in town (the nearest is about 4 km away), but there are comedores and antojitos stands.

From Oaxaca you take the road toward Mitla and continue into the Sierra Mixe; route planners give about 80 km from Mitla and approx. 1 hour by car, and the final stretch is a winding mountain road, often misty. We found no published timetable for a direct bus from Oaxaca, nor the name of the line or terminal. In this region the usual approach is a bus or colectivo toward the Mixe area from Oaxaca, then asking locally for the combi to Tamazulápam; always confirm at the terminal. There is no lodging in town, so plan your return or sleep in a nearby locality (about 4 km away). There is mobile signal (around 92% of homes have a phone), though it can drop on mountain roads.
