Town 62 km west of Santa Rosalía
A desert oasis of date palms around a lagoon, with one of Baja's finest stone missions; the base for whales and cave paintings.
After hours of open desert, San Ignacio appears as a sudden green valley: thousands of date palms around a freshwater lagoon fed by springs in the arroyo. The Cochimí called the place Kadakaamán, and the Jesuit Juan Bautista Luyando founded a mission here in 1728. The missionaries planted dates, figs, grapes and olives, and the date palms still shape the town and its economy.
The town is built around a shady plaza in front of the Misión San Ignacio de Kadakaamán. Its church of dark volcanic stone was finished in 1786 under the Dominican Juan Crisóstomo Gómez, and it is one of the best preserved on the peninsula, with thick walls, a carved façade and a gilded altarpiece inside.
San Ignacio is also the gateway to two of Baja California's great sights, both within the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve: the gray whales of Laguna San Ignacio and the prehistoric cave paintings of the Sierra de San Francisco. A small INAH museum next to the mission introduces the rock art, and it is where visits to the paintings are arranged.
