Beach 83 km southeast of Santa Rosalía
A long, calm bay south of Mulegé lined with white-sand coves like Santispac and El Requesón, ideal for kayaking.
Bahía Concepción is a long, narrow bay on the Sea of Cortez that begins just south of Mulegé and runs some 40 kilometers south, sheltered from the open sea by a mountainous peninsula. Its water is usually calm, clear and turquoise, and its western shore, along Highway 1, is lined with one small white-sand beach after another, many of them with palapas for shade.
The best known include Santispac, with calm, shallow water; Playa El Coyote, quieter, with views across the bay; and El Requesón, where at low tide a sandbar lets you walk out to a small island. Others, like Los Cocos, Buenaventura and Escondida, are dotted along the same shore.
The bay is one of the classic camping spots in Baja: many people pitch a tent or park under a palapa for a few days, kayak and snorkel along the shore, and eat fish tacos at the small restaurants on the beaches.
What to see and do
Walk the sandbar to the island at El Requesón at low tide.
Kayak and snorkel in the calm water of Santispac or El Coyote.
Camp under a palapa on the beach for a night or two.
Eat fish tacos at one of the beach restaurants.
Getting there
From Santa Rosalía, drive south on Highway 1 past Mulegé; the first beaches of the bay appear a few kilometers further south, about an hour and a quarter from Santa Rosalía in all. The beaches are reached by short dirt tracks from the highway. Camping and palapas usually carry a small fee, paid on site, and services are basic, so bring water and supplies from Mulegé.
