Beach 5 km south of Todos Santos
The fishermen's beach just south of town, where pangas surf in through the waves each afternoon with the day's catch.
Punta Lobos is the working beach of Todos Santos, a few minutes south of town, where the local fishermen keep their pangas. Blue and white boats sit on the sand beside palapas and palm trees, and the best time to come is when they return in the afternoon: the pangas wait for a gap between waves and then run straight up onto the beach, and the catch is sold right there.
The point takes its name from the sea lions that live along this coast. The waves and currents here are strong, so it is a beach for watching and walking rather than swimming.
From the beach, a trail climbs the cliffs of the point for wide views over the Pacific, and in winter it is a good place to spot humpback whales. The short hike to the top takes less than an hour, and a longer coastal walk continues south along the bluffs. Fishermen have recently warned that erosion is shrinking the beach.
What to see and do
Watch the pangas surf in through the waves in the afternoon, and buy fish from the fishermen.
Hike the trail up the cliffs of the point for views over the Pacific.
Look for humpback whales offshore in winter.
Walk the beach at sunset, but stay out of the strong surf.
Getting there
Punta Lobos is about 10 minutes from the center of Todos Santos: head south toward the highway and follow the signed dirt road to the beach. There is a dirt parking area near the boat ramp. Wear good shoes for the cliff trail and carry water.
