Town 41 km north of Todos Santos
An old silver-mining town in the hills toward La Paz, with a tall brick smokestack, a music museum and cafés; a long day trip.
El Triunfo is an old mining town in the hills between La Paz and the East Cape, and in the 19th century it was one of the richest places on the peninsula. Gold and silver were found here in the late 1700s, and during the boom the town is said to have had around 10,000 inhabitants; today a few hundred people live among its old adobe and brick houses.
Its landmark is La Ramona, a tall red-brick smokestack built around 1890 to vent the smoke of the ore smelter. Local lore credits its design to Gustave Eiffel, but no firm evidence has ever been found.
In recent years the town has been revived with small museums, including a mining museum and a music museum with old pianos, along with cafés, restaurants and guesthouses, while the ruins of the mining works still dot the surrounding hills. It is closer to La Paz, but makes a full day trip from Todos Santos.
